6th Annual Hope for the Hungry:  "Hunger in the Heartland"

There is still time to register for the Hope for the Hungry conference!  This annual conference looks at ways people and organizations are actively fighting food insecurity in and around the Polk County area.  This year's conference will be held on November 8, 2014 from 9am-2pm at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, Waveland Hall.  For more information, or to register, please click here.

Hunger, Nutrition, and Health Virtual Town Hall Meeting

As part of our ongoing efforts to build awareness about the interconnectedness of hunger, nutrition, and health, Feeding America has convened an exciting panel of experts and innovators for a Virtual Town Hall on Thursday, July 17 at 4pm EST. Our panel will discuss the latest research on the relationship between hunger and diet-related disease and describe common sense, community-based solutions that are both high-impact and low-cost. Got Produce!?  Farm to Food Donation Tax Credit
May 9, 2014

As discussed at the conference, the Farm to Food Donation Tax Credit provides a tax credit for food commodity donations made to an Iowa food bank or emergency feeding organization. To become a qualified agency, you must register with the Iowa Dept. of Revenue. Register at www.iowa.gov/taxlaw/farmtofood.html click the link titled “registration for Food Banks and Food Pantries”, once registered the Dept. of Revenue will furnish you the forms to track donations.

Updated Map the Meal Gap Data!

Feeding America has released updated data and the interactive online maps have been updated with data for 2012.  You can access the data for the state of Iowa, our food bank service area, all the way down to the county level by clicking here.  Data has been updated both for the overall population and among children.

Care Act Information for Your Clients

Iowa State Extension has a great website with resources you may want to share with your clients about their options under the Affordable Care Act. These are times when a major cut in spending is required as you plan how to survive from week to week. Grow Your Community with Cultivate Iowa
Cultivate Iowa is an initiative promoting the benefits of food gardening and produce donation to create a sustainable future and healthier communities in Iowa. 

Through outreach and community engagement, Cultivate Iowa aims to inspire Iowans to grow some of their own produce and live healthier lifestyles. In addition, Cultivate Iowa is focused on empowering gardeners and community members to donate fresh produce to their local food pantries or other community organizations.

Fundraising and Grant Opportunities

Walmart's Holiday Giving Program


We have received the following grant opportunity through Feeding America.

Calling all food pantries, soup kitchens and mobile food delivery programs! Apply to be selected to win a $20,000 grant from Walmart.

This holiday season, Walmart will provide $1.5 million in support of 75 food pantries* across the country, based on votes by the public through its holiday giving campaign.

The application for Walmart’s holiday giving program is now open and will close on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 11:59 pm EDT. The invitation code is jholiday. 

Applications will be reviewed by Walmart. Agencies that are selected by Walmart for voting purposes will be uploaded to Walmart’s website, and those that receive the most votes through various online channels will receive a $20,000 grant to support infrastructure and equipment improvements.

*Walmart’s holiday giving program is open to food pantries, soup kitchens, and mobile food delivery services that serve the public and that are operated by 501(c)(3) charities only. The program is not open to food banks. Please note that program eligibility is not limited to agencies affiliated with Feeding America food banks. This program is not administered by Feeding America.



2014 Darden Restaurant Community Grants Program


This is an exciting program that enables each restaurant in the Darden family to strengthen relationships and contribute to the wellbeing of its community by awarding a $1,000 grant to support local nonprofits, whose work aligns to the Darden Foundation’s three community priorities.

Darden is encouraging Feeding America food banks and food bank partner agencies to participate in the program. Click here to learn more about the program and the grant application.

To be considered for a Darden’s Restaurant Community Grant, food banks and partner agencies should visit www.DardenFoundation.com and submit an application between November 15 and December 10, 2013. We also encourage you to touch base with a local Darden restaurant General Manager or Managing Partner to express your interest in participating in Darden’s Restaurant Community Grants program.
