Morrie Bryant has volunteered at Food Bank of Iowa since 2017, finding purpose and community through service.

“When I retired and my wife, Virginia, retired shortly after I did. We were looking for something,” he said. “This sounds really kind of corny, but in my previous job at Pioneer, the mission of the company was to help feed the world.”

That mission—and a ministry at his church—led him to Food Bank of Iowa. “We just came here and tried a shift and found that we really enjoyed it,” he said.

Over the years, Morrie said the experience has opened his eyes. “It’s given me a wider breadth of knowledge about food insecurity,” he said. “In this business, you want to try to put yourself out of business. And what we’re finding is that the need continues to grow.”

His advice for new volunteers is simple: “Try it. Just try it. I know there’s a lot of places to go… but this is certainly one of them, and I think it’s a great place.”
