Bobby and his wife, Kristin, both manage Type 2 diabetes. Recently, they’ve relied on visits to a Food Bank of Iowa partner to supplement the protein and fresh produce they need to stay healthy.

It can be hard to afford lean meat and vegetables when processed food is inexpensive and more readily available, Bobby said.

“It’s very difficult,” he added. “Cheaper food that’s OK for the masses is not conducive to a diet for someone with health issues.”

Bobby said he is grateful for the food he receives at Pella Community Food Shelf to supplement his limited budget.

Kristin works full-time as a teacher. Bobby has worked as an EMT, a phlebotomist and a restaurant worker. He’s now in a manufacturing training program to learn new job skills. The couple doesn’t qualify for SNAP.

At one point in his life, Bobby said he spent nine months in a shelter. It was there that he first recognized the importance of donors – caring friends like you who ensure our neighbors can access the nutritious food they need to thrive. His appreciation has only deepened with time.
