Donation will provide 440,000 meals to Iowans in need.

During 2020, District 6000 Rotary donated $110,000 to help solve food insecurity in Central Iowa. Under the leadership of District 6000 Governor Erna Morain, Rotarian projects in 2020 focused on the state’s most vulnerable citizens. When her tenure began in early 2020, Erna drew attention to the existing high rate of poverty and food insecurity in Iowa and was determined to help folks living in this dire place of scarcity and fear.

“We are grateful for the support of big-hearted Rotarians,” says Michelle Book, CEO Food Bank of Iowa. “They provided 440,000 meals and without their help, many families would have faced a much more difficult 2020.”

As the year progressed and COVID-19 wreaked havoc on the economy, Erna and District 6000 had incredible foresight as food insecurity doubled overall and tripled for households with children.  When asked to help, generous District 6000 Rotarians stepped up. Working with Feeding America food banks, they provided the equivalent of 440,000 meals for Iowans struggling to make ends meet.

“I want to thank all District 6000 Rotarians and Friends who so generously contributed to the food needs of others,” said Erna Morain, District 6000 Governor. “This is just one more example of Rotarian generosity.”
