The Principal Charity Classic and Variety – the Children’s Charity today announced a $35,000 grant to the Food Bank of Iowa. The funding will help to fulfill the heightened need for food assistance within the state, as children and families face the economic challenges created by COVID-19.

“Having access to healthy and nutritious food is a basic need,” said Sheri McMichael, executive director of Variety – the Children’s Charity. “The funds provided by the Principal Charity Classic and Variety – the Children’s Charity will help ensure that crucial nutrition is provided to Iowa’s children in this unprecedented time.”

Variety and the Principal Charity Classic recognize the need for Iowa children to have a reliable source of healthy food. Without proper nutrition, children will face adverse impacts in their growth, learning and development.

“The Principal Charity Classic is proud to announce this grant on behalf of our sponsors, fans, players, and volunteers,” said Tournament Director Douglas K. Habgood. “Our mission is to unite the community in support of Iowa children, and we are grateful for the opportunity to help families put healthy food on their tables.”

Many parents who have been affected by furloughs or layoffs face the challenge of securing the next meal for their children and have to seek assistance from Food Bank of Iowa, many for the first time. According to Food Bank of Iowa, $1 can provide a meal for up to four people. With this donation, Food Bank of Iowa can provide 140,000 meals to children and their families.

“Support for Iowa’s children is more important than ever before,” said Michelle Book, president and CEO of Food Bank of Iowa. “With an extended summer break coupled with high unemployment, many Iowa families have found themselves in a unique and challenging financial situation. Variety’s generous support will help ensure we have adequate resources to help make sure Iowa’s children have access to the nutritious food needed to thrive.”

Variety is dedicated to improving the lives of children who are underprivileged, at-risk, critically ill and living with special needs throughout Iowa. Funding is provided to programs and initiatives that directly impact the well-being of children in our community. For more information on how you can be a part of our work, please visit
