John Hunolt has always loved working with and being around his community members. He’s known for a long time that he’d want to spend his retirement volunteering.
After working in state vocational services for people with disabilities, John knows how important it is to care for others who are often overlooked and underserved. Upon retiring, a friend of his was giving time to a food pantry by helping to distribute food, and John quickly joined him.
John still helps at the same food pantry and has added another church pantry to his monthly service as well. He’s especially known for his “recruitment work,” encouraging anyone he can to join and give back to the community.
“[I’m] fortunate enough to have good friends who want to help people too,” he says. “I enjoy being able to help.”
John loves serving his neighbors. He’s going on 12 years of volunteering for various organizations, including hanging and taking down community lighting for the holidays. John received the Gene Schultz Community Service Award in 2013 as well as the Iowa Governor’s Volunteer Award in 2021.
Thank you, John, for being such a dedicated volunteer! You’re an outstanding member of our Food Bank of Iowa hunger-fighting team, and we’re grateful to have you.
