Food Bank of Iowa announces $1,000 food contest prize

Nothing compares to the Iowa State Fair, especially when it comes to food. Food Bank of Iowa is proud to partner with the Iowa State Fair in presenting “Food Bank of Iowa Chopped — Hot Dish Edition.” Prizes for this first in the nation state fair contest for a cause are sponsored by Nationwide. Participants interested in showing off their best casserole recipes should act fast. The deadline to enter is July 1.

Contest rules require participants to create a simple and affordable recipe using ingredients commonly available from Food Bank of Iowa or otherwise easily obtainable by pantry guests. Contestants can view the required ingredient table here. Entries will be judged on flavor (50%), ease of preparation (30%) and appearance (20%).

“Hardworking Iowans struggling to make ends meet are often operating on a tight budget with little extra time to be creative in the kitchen,” said Food Bank of Iowa CEO Michelle Book. “Our pantry partners regularly ask for affordable, tasty and simple recipes.”

Blue-ribbon award-winning recipes will be published in an electronic cookbook to be distributed to Food Bank of Iowa pantry partners and available at www.FoodBankIowa.org. Food insecurity continues at record levels.  Be part of the solution by sharing your casserole culinary talents with neighbors in need.

The Food Bank of Iowa Chopped – Hot Dish Edition competition will be judged on Sunday, August 22 at 1:00 p.m. The first-place winner will receive $1,000, second-place winner will receive $150 and third place winner will receive $50. Individuals who are interested can register at https://iowastatefairentry.org/.
